5 Biggest Mistakes DFW Homeowners Make When Buying New Windows

Buying new windows isn't something you do every day. In fact, most homeowners in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex will only do it once in their lives.

Because you don't buy windows often, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the jargon: Low-E, Argon, U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain... what does it all mean?

Unscrupulous contractors rely on your confusion to sell you products that look good in a showroom but fail miserably in the Texas heat.

At Bridgewood Exteriors, we have seen the aftermath of bad decisions; foggy glass, warped frames, and energy bills that never went down. To help you protect your investment, we’ve compiled the five biggest mistakes DFW homeowners make (and how to avoid them).

1. Ignoring the "Solar Heat Gain" (The Texas Factor)

The biggest mistake is buying a window designed for Chicago, not Dallas.

In the window industry, there is a rating called SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient). It measures how much solar heat gets through the glass.

• In the North, you want high heat gain to warm your home in winter.

• In DFW, you must have low heat gain to stop your home from baking in the summer.

The Mistake: Buying a window with a high SHGC (anything over 0.25).

The Fix: Ensure your windows have a "Southern Climate" Low-E coating specifically designed to reflect our intense UV rays. If a salesperson can’t tell you the SHGC rating, walk away.

2. Buying Based on Brand Name, Not Specs

We see this constantly in Frisco and Plano. Homeowners recognize a famous national window brand from TV commercials and assume it must be the best.

The Truth: Big national brands often sell "builder grade" lines that are made cheaply to be sold in bulk. Just because a window has a famous sticker on it doesn't mean it has the reinforced vinyl or high-performance glass required for North Texas.

The Fix: Look at the NFRC Label (the nutrition label for windows), not the TV commercial. Compare the numbers. Often, a high-quality window from a specialized manufacturer (like the ones we carry) will outperform a "famous" brand by a wide margin and often for a better price.

3. Treating All Sides of the House the Same

Does your West-facing bedroom get hotter than your North-facing kitchen? Of course it does. So why would you put the exact same glass in both?

The Mistake: Using a "one size fits all" glass package for the entire home.

The Fix: Smart homeowners customize. You might put a heavy-duty, triple-silver Low-E glass on the West side to kill the afternoon sun, while using a clearer, brighter glass on the North side to let in more natural light. This is called "elevation-specific" tuning, and it’s a hallmark of a professional installation.

4. Overlooking the Installation Crew

You can buy a $2,000 window, but if it is installed out of square, it will perform like a $200 window.

Many budget window companies in DFW sub-contract their labor to the lowest bidder. These crews are often paid by the window, meaning they are incentivized to rip your old windows out and slap the new ones in as fast as possible. This leads to air gaps, water leaks, and foundation shifting issues later.

The Fix: Ask your window company: "Are your installers employees or sub-contractors? How long have they been working with you?" At Bridgewood Exteriors, we believe the installation is just as important as the manufacturing.

5. Falling for the "Buy One, Get One Free" Gimmick

If something sounds too good to be true, it is. You’ve seen the flyers: "Buy 1 Window, Get 1 Free!" or "40% Off This Month Only!"

The Reality: High-quality windows have a fixed cost of manufacturing. No company can give away 50% of their product and stay in business unless they inflated the original price by 100% before you walked in the door.

The Fix: Look for honest, line-item pricing. A reputable company will give you a fair price upfront without requiring you to sign a contract "right this second" to lock in a fake discount.

Do It Right the First Time

Your home is your biggest asset. Don't risk its value (or your comfort) on high-pressure sales tactics or insufficient glass technology.
